Alderley Edge is a tree town. London Road, Macclesfield Road and most of the residential lanes off them run under mature limes and horse chestnuts, and anything parked under those from May onwards gets sap. Sap is not dirt. It is a resin that softens in the sun, flows into the texture of the lacquer, then hardens. Left through one hot week it stops being something you wash off and becomes something that has to be levelled out with a machine.
The second thing is the driveways. Gravel and block paving are the standard here, and both throw grit at the lower doors, sills and rear arches every time a car moves. That is why the paint on an Alderley Edge car is often near perfect above the swage line and chipped to bits below it.
The third thing is the one nobody expects. A lot of cars here do very few miles. Low mileage protects the mechanicals and does nothing for the finish. A car that sits collects bonded dust instead of dirt that rinses, discs corrode, and the paint picks up its swirl marks not from the road but from being washed too gently by the wrong hands with the wrong sponge. Most of the correction work we do in SK9 is undoing washing, not driving.
The single most requested job in SK9, and usually not because the car has been driven hard. It is sap etching, gravel rash along the sills, and swirl marks put in by well meant washing.
Worth more here than almost anywhere. A coated panel gives sap and bird lime nothing to key into, so what would have etched the lacquer sits on the surface and lifts off instead.
For a leased or PCP car coming to the end of its term. Inspection charges are levied per panel, and correcting the same panels properly is normally the cheaper side of that arithmetic.
We need roughly a car and a half of width so we can work both sides without dragging kit past your paint. If the car lives in a garage, a correction or coating job is better done on the drive where we can get light on the panel from every angle.
For a Signature Detail we need a hosepipe and an outdoor plug. For correction or coating work, reliable access to both matters more because it is a full day.
